The Ancient City of Kassopi

The ancient city of Kassopi is located on the way to the “Zalogo monument,” not far from the main road and approximately 30 minutes away from the nearest beach. Perched atop a hill, this city holds a unique place in history, with a heritage spanning 2,500 years. Positioned strategically, Kassopi offers a breathtaking view of the Amvrakikos Gulf and the surrounding area. Today, it stands as the most visited archaeological site in the prefecture of Preveza.

Features of Kassopi

Kassopi boasts an excellent drainage system, designed to handle both sewage and rainwater. Constructed according to the Hippodamian system, the city comprises 20 parallel streets, forming around 60 building blocks. Historians estimate that the population of Kassopi ranged from 5,000 to 10,000 people. Exploring the archaeological area, visitors can witness the small theater, the Prytaneion, the Conservatory, the Aphrodite Altar, and a Macedonian tomb.

Protected on All Sides

Kassopi was fortified on its southern and eastern sides with robust cyclopean polygonal walls, remnants of which can be observed at several locations. The total length of these walls is estimated to be around 6 kilometers, with a maximum height of 10 meters and a width of 3-5 meters. These walls provided protection for areas naturally vulnerable, and the city had two primary entrances, one to the east and one to the west. The eastern gate, which is now used by tourists, was safeguarded by a large metal gate, with its reception area still preserved on the rock. Informative boards in Greek and English are available to provide insights into the historical significance of the site.
